Jury Duty Scam / It can’t happen here.

I got a note from a friend about the new Jury Duty – Identity Theft scam.http://www.snopes.com/crime/fraud/juryduty.asp

I just wanted to let you know that it can’t happen here. Why?I live in a county that is about 1500 square miles. The population is under 7000 people (yes that is fewer than 5 persons per square mile). Bear in mind that almost 2000 live in the county seat so it is not nearly that crowded out here in the country.

There has not been a jury trial in this county since I have been here.  That’s over 3 1/2 years!  My wife got a letter in 2006 telling her that she was in the jury pool for the year.  If they were to have a trial, she would be called.  She never was.  Here’s the funny part.  In the letter it asks you to call the Clerk of the Court if you are going to be away for any length of time.  When she called to tell them we were going on a trip out of state, they laughed!  But they did thank her.

Not to say that crime does not exist here.  Two years ago there was a rash of break-ins and almost $100.00 was stolen from local businesses in the course of two weeks.  Then it stopped.  I asked our Sherriff (yes, we have a real Sherriff – not a Chief of Police) about this and he told me he knew who it was but couldn’t prove it.  He also implied that he did not expect to see it happen again.

There was also a Meth lab in a small town north of me this last year but their stupidity gave them away. They were arrested and pled guilty.  Again, no jury trial.

So if someone were to try to use the Jury duty scam here he would just get laughed right off the phone.  After all, we all know the Clerk of the court and the Sheriff by face and voice.  If there were a Jury Trial here it would be BIG news.  Everyone would not only know about the trial but they would also know who was on the jury!
